It's 8:47 AM, I'm on the Lake Shore Limited, this is my experiance of my 1st cross Train trip from Albuquerque to Manhattan. The Southwest Chief was 2.5 hours late in leaving Albuquerque and 6 hours late arriving in Chicago. I had a sleeper, the accommodations were ok - some white goop on the privacy curtain, an odd stain on a cushion, sheets and a blanket which looked like they been washed 100 times too many, in general the cabin was tired i guess it dates to the late 1970's or early '80's. The shared bath was adequate, just barely, no shelf to put your things on. The cabin steward was friendly, polite and attentive to his guest. He kept the bathroom clean made fresh coffee. He took pride in his work.
Arrival in Chicago was 6.5 hors late. This caused the Lake Shore Limited to add 2 additional cars and to depart an hour late. The boarding of the LS Limited was a preview of the detached behavior, bordering on rude and dismissive of the crew as we were herded onto our car only lacked an electric shock. On board (coach), the steward got verbal with a passenger and threatened the police. At 1 AM the conductor walks thru starring straight & high ignoring and not shushing 3 teens talking and giggling. At 6 AM in the dining car no one said 'Morning' then when I ordered just side dishes I was told no sides with out a full meal when I asked can I drink my Oj & coffee he took them away and told me to go the cafe car. The crew of the SW treated us like guest on vacation. On the SL we are treated as a burden and unwelcome stranger.
